Kwach Academy is a child-focused project based in Gulu, Northern Uganda. (Kwach means leopard in Acholi, which is the local dialect in the region). Kwach aims to work with children of all ages and their families/caregivers.
Kwach Academy’s purpose is to enhance the welfare of the children who have been tremendously affected by the 23 years of civil war in the region. Kwach Academy identifies some of the problems that are facing parents/caregivers and their children and works towards minimising some of these problems.
Our primary goal is to provide direction for some of the children who were abducted as child soldiers who have lost so much in the way of education, self respect, self worth and self esteem. We also provide an alternative route to education for young adults through apprenticeship with local businesses and or training opportunities.
Kwach Academy programmes give children and young adults who have been tremendously traumatised in their young lives the experience of an alternative therapy through arts, music, dance and drama. These are effective tools in helping youths to express their emotions as well as to work through and release psychological stress and trauma.
Kwach Academy has also established the “Miss Acholi” cultural contest which aims to promote cultural revival and cultural identity the grassroots. |

Letter from the Founder
Kwach Academy was created to provide opportunities to northern Ugandan children and protect the welfare of children in the war torn region that has lasted for more than 23 years. Protecting children is something that we must all do our ultimate best to support and get involve. Children are the future of the community and as community we have the obligation and duty to protect them.
In Northern Uganda, the basic needs of children to the highest degree has not been fulfilled. 90% of children have either dropped out of school due to lack of funding towards their school fees and do not attend any form of school. 90% of the children live in Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDP) in terrible conditions. 95% of the children cannot read or write, many never finished primary education due to the war in the North.
As a non-profit making organisation, Kwach Academy is involved in many initiatives to support children and their families. Kwach Academy aims to promote and create community based strategies and resources that enhance the wellbeing of children and their families
We would be grateful if you can get in involved by assisting us with your skills, experiences and talents or becoming a donor to help us achieve our goals. It’s also my belief that child poverty exists because the parents themselves are very poor. Helping the parents/caregivers is also a way of achieving the objectives of independency within the community, to achieve this; we have introduced microloans and training to the parents/caregivers.
All the children who attend Kwach Academy programs get their school fees paid and we will be introducing in house training and apprenticeships programme from next year.
The more people that get involved, we can work towards minimising poverty with the same goals and visions. Unity is wealth, so united we can achieve the ultimate goal, kindness and compassion is what enriched our lives.
